The Totteridge Institute for Advanced Studies

Welcome

TIFAS Aims & Scope

The Totteridge Institute for Advanced Studies was founded as a virtual Institute with the aim of sponsoring collaborative academic studies in the Arts and Sciences, largely by means of theoretical investigations and wide-ranging discussions.

At its inception the Institute was envisaged as embracing a special role in the encouragement of speculative hypotheses and their critical examination. Among its aims is the search for unifying principles in all aspects of knowledge.

The fundamental philosophy of the Totteridge Institute is stated in its motto: “Notitia Ens Rationis” (‘Knowledge is the Product of Reason’) which distinguishes knowledge from ‘information’.

The Institute is currently under the direction of Professor Patrick A Riley, Emeritus Professor of Cell Pathology UCL, and embraces a Faculty of eminent experts in biomedicine and related disciplines.

The TIFAS website is continuously in the course of modification and updating as the topics of current interest alter. It is hoped that the website displays useful information about the work of the Institute and examples of the many areas of endeavour that come within the wide ambit of its interests and preoccupations in Philosophy, Science and the Arts.
